Indoor & Outdoor Units
Cross-Flow vs. Axial — Which Do You Need?
Cross-flow (tangential) blower wheel — indoor air handler.
Moves conditioned air horizontally across the evaporator coil into the room.
Also called squirrel-cage or barrel fan. Failure signs: reduced airflow, rattling, visible cracks.
Axial fan blade — outdoor condenser unit.
Draws outside air across the condenser coil to reject heat.
Failure signs: outdoor unit overheating, high-pressure protection trips.
Finding the Right Replacement
Step
What to do
1
Read the code printed on the hub (e.g., GL-94*605-N, ZL-554*148)
2
Search that code — every listing shows compatible units
Can I replace just the fan blade, or do I need the whole assembly?⌄
The cross-flow wheel and the axial fan blade are sold separately from the motor.
If both are faulty, order each separately from the relevant category.
Motor listings are in Fan Motors.
The fan spins but airflow is very low — is it the blower?⌄
A cracked or warped cross-flow wheel can spin while moving very little air. Inspect visually.
If the wheel looks intact, check: clogged filter, closed louvers, or motor bearing wear. If cracked, replace the blower wheel.
How do I remove a mini split blower wheel?⌄
Shut off power to the unit, remove the front panel and evaporator cover, then slide the wheel
off the motor shaft. Most wheels use a set screw or friction fit — check the service manual for your model.
No refrigerant work is involved.
